On a crisp Saturday morning, March 8, 2025, a group of compassionate and determined Bucknell University students led by Rev. Kurt Nelson, the school’s Director of Religious & Spiritual Life and Chaplain for the Protestant Community, joined us at New Creation Christian Church in Baltimore, MD, for something truly special: the first gardening day of the year.  The group of students are taking a course of Food, Faith and Justice and for the past many years have included our organization as one of the stops in their immersive experience.

Winter had left its mark on the garden—barren beds, soil heavy with rest, and vines waiting to be untangled. But as the sun broke through the chill, we rolled up our sleeves together to bring the garden back to life.

The students arrived with energy that could warm even the coldest morning. Some hauled mulch, others tilled the beds, and a few carefully pruned stems with a precision that spoke to their care and commitment. The rhythmic sounds of rakes brushing through soil and laughter echoing across the space created a harmony that felt sacred.

This day wasn’t just about preparing the land—it was about nurturing the bonds of community. Watching Bucknell students and members of our church work side by side reminded me of the power of collective effort. With each weed pulled, each seed planted, we were sowing more than a garden; we were planting hope.

To our Bucknell partners: thank you for your hearts, your hands, and your willingness to serve. Because of you, this garden is ready to flourish once again. And as it grows, so will the connection we’ve cultivated between our communities.

Here’s to the first of many spring awakenings. 🌻
