Some of the best community spaces don’t need a building. They need a reason to gather, an open invitation, and a reason to come back.

This summer and into the fall, gardens, farms, and markets have become those spaces for us. At places like DeBorah’s Garden at New Creation Christian Church in Baltimore, neighbors come together to plant, harvest, and steward the land side by side. What starts as a volunteer day quickly becomes something more.

Conversations start over a wheelbarrow. Neighbors become a crew. The harvest feeds the same community that planted it. When the church and the community work the soil together, we do more than grow food. We co-create Black food ecosystems rooted in faith, and we reclaim our power to feed ourselves.

I’ve heard volunteers share why they keep coming back, and their reasons say it best:

  • To move their bodies. Many come for the steady, low-impact exercise that digging, planting, and hauling provide, no matter their age or fitness level.
  • To restore their minds and spirits. Others say time outdoors with their hands in the soil lowers their stress and helps them slow down, breathe, and reconnect with God’s creation.
  • To build real connection. Volunteers talk about how shared work turns neighbors into friends and strengthens the bond between the church and the community it serves.
  • To grow food sovereignty. Some come because every bed they plant puts fresh, locally grown produce in the hands of our community and builds our capacity to feed ourselves.
  • To pass on knowledge. Seasoned growers love teaching, and first-timers love learning. Side by side, they carry forward the growing traditions our ancestors brought to this land.

Healthy bodies, restored spirits, connected neighbors, a community that feeds itself, and a legacy that lasts. Whatever brings you, there’s a reason to stay.

The ground is ready, and there’s room for you. Together, we’re building health, wealth, and power, one garden bed at a time.
