The Black Church Food Security Network celebrates the passage of the Community Healthy Food Access Act in Baltimore. This bill was signed into law by Mayor Brandon Scott on October 5, 2026. It will establish the Healthy Food Priority Area Grant Program and a Planning Division that will ensure that neighborhoods that are most directly affected by food apartheid have greater access to nutrient rich food. Anticipated resources from this Act will support grassroots organizations, farms, grocers and other retail outlets in expanding their food security efforts.
We are grateful to Councilwoman Porter for inviting us to be a part of the process of shaping this legislation and look forward to collaborating with others in rolling it out at the neighborhood level very soon.
In the meantime, we will continue working with our member churches in Baltimore to grow food, organize congregations, support Black farmers and recruit more ministries to join us in our efforts to eradicate food apartheid and further food security and food sovereignty in our community.
