Our Programs

As a member of the Black Church Food Security Network (BCFSN), you have access to unique programs that allow us to become an extension of your local food ministry.

Operation Higher Ground

We partner with congregations to establish or expand gardens or agricultural projects, such as rainwater collection or compost systems, on church-owned land.

Connecting the vast inventory of church-owned land with agricultural initiatives can provide a myriad of health-related, environmental, and economic benefits to the African American community and beyond.

We currently provide training, technical assistance, and funding to church gardens in Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, Tennessee, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Nebraska.

SOIL TO SANCTUARY MARKET

Through the Soil to Sanctuary Market we partner with congregations to bring miniature farmer’s markets to churches on days that they worship or gather.

Having Black farmers and food business owners selling their items at Houses of Worship provides a mutually beneficial opportunity for growers/producers to tap into a niche’ market and for congregants and neighbors to have greater access to nutrient-rich food.

Our vendors have reported higher sales since participating in our markets and surveys of attendees indicate satisfaction with a food event catered to their wants and needs.

BLACK CHURCH SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

As the coronavirus pandemic unfolded, we knew that we had to respond. We created the Black Church Supported Agriculture program to give churches an opportunity to buy wholesale from Black farmers as part of their community food outreach efforts.

This program is distinct from other food box programs in that we source exclusively from Black farmers – simultaneously advancing economic justice while providing support for those in need of food.

We continue to provide this opportunity today for churches in the DMV.  Plans are underway to expand this program to other regions as well.
