Last month, the Black Church Food Security Network was invited to Jacksonville, Florida. There, we met an eager crowd of welcoming farmers, faith leaders, public health and elected officials. Despite generations of food apartheid, we met people there who are doing amazing work to advance food security and sovereignty. By the time we left, nearly 20 churches had signed up to become members of this Network and we’re confident that that number will only grow.
Special thank you to Pastor Stevie Taylor, Farmer Gene Montgomery, The Honorable Ashantae Green, Eat Your Yard Jax, Overalls Farm, Jocelyn Turner, and the chief architect of our visit, Dr. Laureen Husband.
Just like in Philadelphia, we are establishing a Local Coordinating Committee this year in Jacksonville. The Committee will be led by Dr. Husband and others that are local to the Jacksonville community. Stay tuned for what’s next in Duuuuval!
