Over the last several months, Azariah Moore has worked with Black Church Food Collective Network as an intern. She started her journey with BCFSN while she was an undergraduate student at Towson University. While majoring in International studies and having minors in Japanese and political science, Azariah was a key member in her club Towson Freedom school. She connected with Reverend Brown and began her journey volunteering with BCFSN. A strong professional connection was developed which led to her joining onboard as a team member and being an intern for the program. In her position as an intern focusing on strengthening the relationships between BCFSN and The Maryland Food Bank, Azariah says that the most important thing she learned was “ensuring that the intent behind your work is impactful for the people you are trying to serve.” How great of Azariah for leaving us with great words of wisdom before her departure!

While Azariah has absolutely loved her time with us here and shared that this role allowed her to gain a greater passion for working with underserved and underrepresented communities, in a short couple of weeks she will be leaving us and heading off to Japan. Azariah will be starting a new job as an assistant language teacher under the JET Program. She is excited to become fluent in another language as well as utilize the many skills that she learned while working here. This new position is just one step in Azariah’s journey. Her long term plan is to become a practicing attorney who is a community advocate that focuses on human and civil rights.

As we extend many congratulations to Azariah, let her journey be a reminder to take a chance and speak with new people because you never know what opportunities lie ahead. While her new job is in a completely different field, Azariah feels prepared to join and work in a new community because one of the most important skills she gained while working at BCFSN was “working in a community setting and being able to connect with them.” Skills are always transferable and can help support you in a variety of different environments. For all of my readers who are looking to volunteer somewhere, but are not sure if they have the right skills, sign up anyways. Learn something new, try something different, volunteer somewhere (hopefully with us) and maybe the next story spotlight will be about you!
